Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official said the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
